Switzerland: lake cities, Alpine journeys and scenic rail
PM SCANDINAVIA · SWITZERLAND
Experience Switzerland through historic cities, lakes, the Alps and carefully planned scenic rail journeys.
A destination designed for people, not just a map
Switzerland should be experienced as a sequence of carefully chosen moments. Historic lake cities, mountain railways and the Alps can create a memorable route for groups, but the scenery alone is not an itinerary. The most satisfying journey gives enough time to appreciate a destination without sacrificing the day to transfers and photographs.
Zurich can provide an international arrival point; Lucerne brings lakeside city life and access to mountain landscapes. Bern introduces a very different urban character, while the Bernese Oberland and Interlaken region offer opportunities to explore Alpine surroundings. For groups interested in rail travel, scenic train journeys may be part of the programme, subject to the route, group capacity and seasonal operation.
We plan the balance between guided city visits, independent moments and scenic experiences. Mountain excursions deserve a realistic weather alternative, and groups need clear information about elevation, walking distances, boarding arrangements and connections between different modes of transport. An impressive viewpoint is only useful when the logistics are appropriate for the people taking part.
PM Scandinavia welcomes individual enquiries about Switzerland as part of a tailor-made journey or group programme. We first agree the scope, preferred transport, possible local support and arrangements that require confirmation. We do not present unverified train reservations or mountain access as guaranteed.
A destination designed for people, not just a map — PM Scandinavia
A good itinerary balances specialist stories, professional guiding and the practical care of group movement. Time for a meal, an unexpected queue or a relaxed pause is planned as deliberately as the main visit.
Zurich: a welcoming urban beginning
Zurich can be a convenient point of arrival and a rewarding city in its own right. Lakeside walks, historic streets and a programme tailored around architecture, everyday life or cultural interests can open the journey. We advise against treating the city only as a transfer point if the group would enjoy time here. The best first day often includes a deliberately modest programme, especially after a flight or a long coach journey.
Lucerne: lakeside heritage and mountain horizons
Lucerne combines a walkable historic centre with the wider setting of Lake Lucerne. The choice of guided route, free time and boat or mountain excursion should respond to who is travelling. Mountain transport makes a dramatic impression, but ticket rules, visibility and timetable connections must be checked. When a programme includes several transport modes, the sequence and meeting points deserve particular attention.
Bern: measured pace and exceptional character
Bern has a distinctive historic atmosphere and can balance a programme focused elsewhere on landscape. The old town lends itself to a themed walking visit when the group’s physical pace and meeting points are considered. We can discuss architecture, city history and an appropriate amount of independent time. Time should also be allowed for transfers and for the practical arrangements of group entry to venues.
Bernese Oberland: the Alps as a lived experience
The Bernese Oberland is one of the strongest reasons to spend time rather than simply pass through Switzerland. For some groups, a lakeside base and gentle viewpoints are the right answer. Others may be particularly interested in higher mountain experiences. We plan around comfort, weather, altitude and the reality of connections. Not every spectacular attraction is right for every group on every date.
Scenic rail: memorable when the timetable works
Swiss rail travel can become a highlight, particularly when a route is chosen for the scenery and not only for transport between hotels. A scenic train is not necessarily a flexible hop-on experience for a large group. Seat availability, reservations, carriage access, luggage, boarding and connections all matter. We distinguish between an inspirational route idea and a confirmed rail booking, and build sensible fallback options for interruptions.
City and mountain balance
We usually begin by considering how many hotel bases a group really needs. Two nights in the same place can create more comfort than a beautiful but exhausting chain of one-night stops. A city-centred programme may suit travellers interested in history and architecture; a mountain-centred one may need more flexible time. A tailored combination can work, provided everyone understands what the journey does and does not include.
Partnership approach for group organisers
We welcome enquiries from group leaders and incoming or outgoing travel professionals for Switzerland. Our first task is to identify the part of the programme requiring guidance, research or local coordination and who will confirm each supplier. Swiss venue admissions, railway reservations, coach logistics and regional guiding arrangements are verified separately; no blanket guarantee or personal accreditation is claimed.
The first details that make planning possible
Send your date range, airports or railway points of arrival, approximate group size, main interests, mobility and comfort needs, and whether scenic rail is an essential objective. Please also indicate a realistic budget and current supplier bookings. It is easier to propose a responsible itinerary when we understand the constraints from the outset.
A considered five-day journey
Day 1: Arrive in Zurich and allow time for orientation and the first city experience.
Day 2: Travel to Lucerne; discover its historic centre and lakeside setting.
Day 3: A suitable mountain or lake excursion with an agreed weather alternative.
Day 4: Continue towards Bern or the Bernese Oberland, depending on the group’s interests.
Day 5: A relaxed departure or an extension centred on scenic rail travel.
Programmes for groups and travel professionals
Switzerland for groups seeking culture and dramatic landscapes. The country lends itself to thoughtfully paced programmes that combine Zurich, Lucerne, Bern and selected Alpine regions. We work from the purpose of the visit: sightseeing, architecture, nature, rail experiences, specialist interests or a balanced holiday for a multi-generation group.
Rail can be a beautiful part of the story, but group reservations, luggage arrangements, transfers and connecting times require care. A route planned for individuals does not always work unchanged for a coach party. Travel organisers also need to account for different price structures, mountain transport, weather and the season in which the programme will take place.
For a short journey, two well-chosen bases may be more rewarding than several hotel moves. A longer itinerary might allow city walks, lakeside experiences and a full day in the mountains. We avoid promising that every lift, pass or scenic train is included: the specific travel dates and suppliers determine what can be booked.
Tell us where your guests begin and end the journey, how many people are expected, the languages required, any accommodation or coach arrangements already made and whether scenic rail is essential or optional. We can help define an appropriate scope and an itinerary that leaves room for the unexpected without losing its shape.
